Average handle timeAHT

Detto anche: average handling time

Average handle time (AHT) is the mean time an agent spends resolving one contact, measured as talk time plus hold time plus after-call work. It is the single largest driver of how many agents a queue needs.

AHT is measured across all three phases, and leaving out after-call work is the most common way teams understate it. A six-minute call with ninety seconds of wrap-up is a 7.5-minute handle time for staffing purposes, not six.

Industry AHT sits around six minutes for inbound customer service — one dataset of 190,702 staffing calculations puts it at 6 minutes 3 seconds — though it varies widely by call type and complexity. Outbound conversations and AI-handled calls are different quantities and should never be pooled into one AHT figure.

Cutting AHT is not automatically good. Rushed calls push work into repeat contacts, which raises total cost while improving the metric. Track it against first contact resolution, never alone.

Domande frequenti

What is included in average handle time?

Talk time, hold time and after-call work. After-call work — logging the call, updating the CRM, sending follow-ups — is frequently omitted, which understates AHT and therefore understates the staffing a queue needs.

What is a good average handle time?

There is no universal target. Around six minutes is typical for inbound customer service, but a technical support queue can legitimately run at fifteen and a simple order-status queue at two. Compare against your own trend and your first contact resolution rate rather than a cross-industry average.
